The Eight Celtic Festivals

Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Many dance teachers offer evenings and events to connect with the earth cycles.
There are eight festivals in the Celtic year: Samhain; Winter Solstice; Imbolc; Spring Equinox; Beltane; Summer Solstice; Lammas and the Autumn Equinox.
They divide naturally into the Solstice and Equinox celebrations (linked to the movement of the sun, the duality of light and dark and which are more masculine in quality) and the earth festivals (which reflect the seasonal/agricultural cycle of the year and are more feminine in quality).
Exploring the feminine festivals of the Celtic Year.
I will be offering the opportunity to come together for four days over Samhain time to immerse in the feminine earth festivals of Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain.
We will learn dances appropriate for each festival and look at stories, legends, myths and rituals associated with each festival.
AT: The Royal Agricultural College which is set in twenty five acres of magnificent grounds around a Victorian Gothic building and which is situated near Cirencester in the heart of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire.
We will dance on a wooden floor in a spacious room. Accommodation is available in single or twin bedded en-suite rooms with tea making facilities and TV. in a very comfortable conference centre, off-site but just an eight minute drive away.
FROM: Thursday 4th - Sunday 7th November 2010

Your Body and You

A workshop exploring body awareness through dance

Often when we dance, all our focus and attention is naturally on our feet and learning the steps. When we use all of our body to dance, this can often begin with feeling ungainly, clumsy even. Once we have learnt the steps and the body movements, what more is there?
I think there is just soooo much more - there is that elusive concept of ‘beyond the steps’ where we can invite ourselves to explore and embrace all of who we are and perhaps move into a still, silent place in our body / mind.
There is the joy of the dance!
This weekend of dancing will focus on your dancing instrument – your body.
We will use beautiful music and dances (classical, traditional and modern) to explore and develop your sense of awareness – not only of yourself but also of others in the circle.
We will use dance ‘exercises’ to help you become aware of how you stand and move; to encourage you to open your heart and to discover some balance and inner harmony, connection, spaciousness, and gentleness in your dancing as well as a melting into the music which is such a delight.
Where? The Royal Agricultural College which is set in twenty five acres of magnificent grounds around a Victorian Gothic building and which is situated near Cirencester in the heart of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire.
We will dance on a wooden floor in a spacious room. Accommodation is available in single or twin bedded en-suite rooms with tea making facilities and TV. in a very comfortable conference centre, off-site but just an eight minute drive away.
Cost? £295 in a single room (Limited numbers), £270 in a twin room
or £220 for a non-residential place.
Due to the nature of this course, the group size will be limited to 20

 Live Music

Fado Dance Holiday in Portugal

With Nanni Kloke, Till Schmidt-Rimpler and Serendipity!

Fado (translated as destiny or fate) is a music genre which can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word saudade (that has no match in English but it could be understood as nostalgia felt while missing something or someone important), a word describing a sentiment.
Course content:
Nanni and Till have choreographed some gorgeous dances to some FABULOUS Fado music – and this is what they will be teaching.
Serendipity will be providing live music to dance to at other times.
We will also experience a Fado concert by a wonderful local group who will come out to us one evening. The last night of our holiday will be spent in Porto. We will have dinner and enjoy a Fado concert at the Largo de São Joâo Novo and stay in a nearby hotel.
There are also many additional activities which you can take part in during your free time e.g. for the serious walkers amongst you- hiking in the Serra da Estrelain; mountain biking in the valley and the Serra; horse-riding - a tour of a few hours or lessons; Portuguese cooking workshop; sheep herding for a morning or afternoon or painting/drawing in the open air workshop.
The Venue:
Dominio Vale do Mondego is situated in the green heart of Portugal, in the Beira Alta region, in the centre of the country between the small medieaval villages of Faia and Pero Soares. It is situated 12 km from the provincial city of Guarda and 50 km from the Spanish border.
The accommodation is in shared Cabanas with twin or double rooms, each with their own ‘front door’, opening directly onto the Panorama terrace. Please note that there are NO single rooms.
Each Cabana has a mini-kitchenette with the facilities to make breakfast. All the ingredients for breakfast - bread, tea/coffee, milk, eggs, cheese, etc - are brought to your Cabana every morning, so you decide when you want to have your breakfast.
There is also a swimming pool.
For more information, look on their website: www.dominiovaledomondego.com
Group size:
The minimum number to make this holiday happen is 20 participants and the maximum is 25.
Cost: The cost of the week is €870 (euros)
This includes your transfer to and from Porto airport; all accommodation and food; all dance sessions; on site Fado concert; optional afternoon activities and the last night dinner, concert and overnight stay in a hotel in Porto.
NOT included is: your air fare; Nanni’s workshop CD and notation; workshop DVD; alcohol taken with your meals; any additional outings you take individually or we spontaneously decide to do as a group; food (apart from concert dinner) when we are in Porto for the last 24hours of the holiday.
Other things you’ll need to know:
*) The closest airport is Porto. The coach to our venue will leave at a set time. Please check with Judy before booking your flight.
*) The temperature should a lovely 25 degrees. It will obviously be cooler in the evenings.
*) The dance floor is hard (not wooden, so I suggest you dance in shoes not bare feet).
*) Bring a hat! Sometimes we will be dancing in the open air.
*) To book your place, please send Judy a non-returnable deposit of €200 (euros).
Please contact me for my bank account details.
*) You MUST take out holiday insurance for this week. Due to our various financial commitments
in running this course, we are unable to offer refunds on your deposit if you have to cancel.
As I’m sure you can appreciate, trying to organize a foreign holiday this far ahead is very challenging! I have made the best estimates on price that I can, taking inflation into account but I’m sure that you appreciate that I can’t pin down prices exactly. I will do everything in my power to make sure that prices do not increase, but I must reserve the right to charge a supplement if prices do go haywire.
All the prices I have been quoted are in Euros. So in order to cope with the fluctuation in exchange rate between the pound and the euro you need to pay for this holiday in euros. (Please contact Judy for her bank account details.)
Please contact Judy King for further details ()
See you there!
